What is plate glass?
Plate glass is essentially flat glass sheets. Plate glass can be cut to a range of shapes and sizes, and can be manufactured in a variety of thicknesses to suit many different uses. Treatments such as frosting and tints can also be applied for applications that require privacy.
How is plate glass used?
Plate glass can be cut to measure for use in a wide range of applications from windows to furniture construction. Some common uses for plate glass include:
- Custom window louvers
- Shelving systems
- Glass-top coffee
- Dining tables
How is plate glass made?
Melted glass is poured into a molten tin bath. The bath is slowly cooled until the melted glass solidifies and is removed onto glass rollers. Plate glass can also be strengthened during the manufacturing process with chemical additives.
Is plate glass safe?
Yes. Plate glass can be tempered for increased safety. Tempered glass won’t smashing into long, sharp shards, but will shatter into small pieces that are less likely to cause serious injury.
